El Puente

A band of commercial buildings flock to a creek paralleled by the railroad which have interrupted the grid.

North Palm Springs

The 10 fwy and Hwy 111 create edges for the triangular piece of land that houses wind turbines. The two transportation arteries have interrupted the grid creating a new grain. The slope on this site houses a wash which drains all the way to the Salton Sea. The water running through the site is diverted into water basins.

Salton Sea

The Salton Sea and Hwy create edges

Redlands

The shift in topography, quarry, wash, and railroad create divisions/ boundaries within this area.

Highland

A wash creates a boundary between a farming community and an airport.

Coachella

The base of the mountain creates an edge. The change in topography prohibits the grid to climb.

Farmers Markets/ Train Transportation

Small Circles= weekly farmers markets
Medium Circle= daily farmers markets (still gathering research)
Large Circle= location of 15-30 produce distribution centers

An inverse relationship is happening with farmland to farmers markets. Inverse Map to come.

Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier acts as an extension of the 10 fwy (visually), protruding into the Pacific. The pier acts as a bridge connecting the natural with the man made, an interruption of the edge.

Laurel Canyon

Laurel Canyon shows a shift in the infrastructure as it meets topography creating a boundary in section and plan.

Pacific Ocean to Salton Sea

Still In Progress: This map highlighting the 10Fwy also shows topography and main arteries. I am currently working on the patterning that is happening with the grid. The highlighted areas are locations where a shift in the pattern/grid has taken place.

Interruption of the Grid 1

Instance 1: NW of Redlands
This diagram shows the infrastructure of built communities next to farm lands. The grid is interrupted at the North by a large wash (which services the farm).
